Penang with Kids: 7 Day Penang Itinerary + Best Things to Do, Food & Travel Guide

Penang Family Travel Guide

If you’re planning a trip to Penang with kids, you’re in the right place — because this turned out to be one of our easiest and most enjoyable family trips so far 😆

Penang is honestly such a great destination for families. You get the best of both worlds — beach resorts in Batu Ferringhi and city exploration in George Town, all within short travelling distance. This means less time commuting (very important with kids!) and more time actually enjoying your trip.

Located on the northwest coast of Malaysia, Penang consists of two main parts:

1. George Town
The UNESCO World Heritage capital of Penang. This is where you’ll find colonial architecture, street art, temples, heritage shophouses and many of the island’s famous hawker stalls.

2. Batu Ferringhi
A beach town about 30 minutes from George Town known for its sandy beaches, resort hotels and family‑friendly activities.

Over the course of our trip, we covered a good mix of:

  • Indoor attractions (perfect for hot or rainy days)
  • Nature experiences like butterfly parks
  • Beach time to let the kids run free
  • Kid-friendly cafés and playgrounds
  • And of course… LOTS of Penang food 🍜

In this guide, I’ll be sharing our full 7 day Penang itinerary with kids, including where we stayed, what we did each day, and tips to make your trip smoother. I’ve also included recommendations on attractions and food, plus how we saved money by booking through Klook (don’t forget to use my code HENGXKLOOK for extra savings!).

Whether you’re travelling with toddlers, young kids, or even a baby like us, this itinerary will help you plan a fun, efficient, and stress-free Penang trip.

Why We Chose Penang For A Family Trip

When travelling with young children, choosing a destination with a short flight time is extremely important. We wanted somewhere that was easy to reach without long travel hours.

Penang turned out to be the perfect choice because the flight from Singapore is only about 1.5 hours. We also like it that Georgetown can be easily reach in ~ 35 mins (if no jam) / Beach Area Batu Ferringhi in less than an hour from Penang International Airport

The boys also stayed happily occupied with the activity kit we brought along.

With two young kids, we needed something that was:

  • Flexible
  • Not too packed
  • Balanced between play + rest

So instead of squeezing everything into a few days, we structured our trip like this:

👉 First half: Georgetown (food + cafes + indoor play)
👉 Second half: Batu Ferringhi (resort + beach + slower pace)

And honestly — this made ALL the difference.

Airport Transfer Tip

To make travelling with kids easier, we pre‑booked our airport transfers via Klook.

Booking airport transfers in advance removes the stress of finding transport after landing, especially when travelling with young children and luggage.

Our driver was already waiting when we arrived, and the ride to our hotel was smooth and comfortable.

The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and we loved how everything we needed — food, shopping, and entertainment — was just a short drive away. Its location makes it extremely convenient for exploring George Town as well as nearby shopping areas like Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon.

Our 7 Day Penang Family Itinerary

Below is the itinerary we followed during our trip, which worked very well when travelling with young kids.

Day 1: Arrival In Penang

After landing in Penang, our Klook Penang Airpot Transfer took us directly to Penang Marriot Hotel in Georgetown.

The journey took about 35 minutes. Once we checked in and settled down, we decided to head out for playground fun nearby.

We visited:

A+ Go Playground

A Plus Penang
A Plus Penang

Location: Gurney Paragon Mall
Address: 163D Persiaran Gurney, 10250 George Town

This indoor playground features:

• Climbing structures
• Slides and obstacle courses
• Ball pits

After playtime we headed to dinner at Gurney Paragon Mall.

Day 2: Heritage Walk + ATV Adventure

🌊 Gurney Drive & Armenian Street

📍 Persiaran Gurney

Gurney Drive is a well-known coastal promenade in Penang, popular for its sea views and local food scene. While it’s often associated with street food, it’s also a nice place for a relaxed walk, especially in the evening.

If you’re looking for Penang’s famous murals, those are actually located more within George Town (like Armenian Street), rather than Gurney Drive.

🏎️ ATV Ride at Balik Pulau

Pualu Balik ATV
Pualu Balik ATV

This was easily one of the most exciting activities of the trip — not just for the kids, but for us too.

Each ATV accommodates one parent and one child, making it a safe yet adventurous experience. The trails take you through scenic routes, including plantations and off-road paths, giving you a completely different perspective of Penang.

The ride was beginner-friendly, with a briefing provided before starting, Both boys absolutely loved it, and it was a great way to break away from malls and indoor activities.

Day 3: The TOP Penang + Shopping Malls

🎢 The TOP Penang

📍 Komtar, George Town

The TOP is a multi-attraction indoor complex located within Komtar Tower, offering a variety of activities under one roof. From observation decks to interactive exhibits, it provides a mix of entertainment that can appeal to both kids and adults.

One of the biggest advantages of visiting The TOP is that its collection of indoor and outdoor activities under one roof, making it a great option for escaping the heat or rain. The variety also means you can adjust how much time you spend here depending on your kids’ energy levels.

While it’s not purely a playground, it adds variety to the trip and gives kids something different from the usual play spaces.

🛍️ Prangin Mall & 1st Avenue Mall

📍 George Town

These two malls are conveniently located next to each other, making it easy to explore both in one visit. They offer a mix of shopping, dining, and casual entertainment options.

We kept this part of the day flexible — walking around, grabbing dinner, and just slowing things down. We also stumbled upon a small indoor playground called Jaemi Wonderland — such a great find! It’s super value for money (only RM35–RM45 for unlimited playtime), so we let the boys burn off their energy while we took turns enjoying a quick massage just across at The Zen Massage Parlor. Total win for both kids and parents 😆

After a few busy days, this kind of unstructured time was actually very helpful to avoid overstimulation for the kids.

Day 4: UFOREA Playground + Miniverse Café

🌈 Uforia Indoor Playground

UForea Penang

Uforia is one of the newest and largest indoor playgrounds in Penang, and it truly feels like stepping into a futuristic play world. The space is thoughtfully designed with multiple themed zones, including climbing walls, slides, obstacle courses, and imaginative play areas that cater to different age groups.

What stood out most was how visually engaging the playground was — pastel tones, creative layouts, and interactive elements that kept the kids constantly moving and exploring. Hengboi especially loved the climbing sections, while the younger one enjoyed the softer play zones.

As parents, we appreciated that the space was clean, well-maintained, and spacious enough that it never felt overly crowded. It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend a few hours, making it a great half-day activity, especially on hot or rainy days.

🧁 Miniverse Kids Café

📍 118 Jalan Tanjung Tokong, 10470 George Town

Miniverse Kids Cafe

Miniverse is more than just a kids café — it’s an aesthetically designed play space that combines dining with entertainment seamlessly. The moment we walked in, we noticed how thoughtfully curated everything was, from the soft play areas to the themed setups that encourage imaginative play.

The café features a ball pit, role-play stations, and interactive corners that kept both kids engaged while we finally got to sit down and enjoy a proper meal. It’s one of those rare places where both kids and parents get what they want — fun for them, and a break for us.

We also found the food selection decent and family-friendly, making it easy to settle in for a longer break. Definitely a great mid-day stop to recharge before continuing the day.

Day 5: Kek Lok Si Temple & Penang Hill, Entopia Butterfly Farm

We pre‑booked our Penang Charter (4 hours/8 hours) via Klook.

One of the most famous cultural attractions in Penang is:

🏯 Kek Lok Si Temple

📍 Air Itam

Kek Lok Si is one of the largest and most impressive temples in Southeast Asia. The temple complex is expansive, with multiple levels, prayer halls, and beautifully detailed architecture.

One of the highlights is the towering statue of the Goddess of Mercy, as well as the iconic pagoda that blends Chinese, Thai, and Burmese design elements. Walking through the temple grounds feels both peaceful and visually stunning.

Do note that there is some walking involved, so plan accordingly if you’re travelling with younger kids.

🌄 Penang Hill

We took the funicular train up Penang Hill, which was an experience in itself. The ride is steep and scenic, offering beautiful views as you ascend.

At the top, the air is noticeably cooler, making it a refreshing break from the heat. There are walking paths, viewpoints, and cafés where you can relax and enjoy the surroundings.

It’s a nice way to slow down and take in a different side of Penang beyond

After landing in Penang, our Klook airport transfer took us directly to PARKROYAL Penang Resort in Batu Ferringhi.

Entopia by Butterfly Farm

Address: 830 Jalan Teluk Bahang, 11050 Penang

Entopia Penang

Before visiting, we highly recommend purchasing tickets through Klook because it is usually cheaper than buying tickets onsite.

👉 🎟️ Book Entopia Tickets (Cheaper Than Onsite)
👉 Skip the queue & enjoy instant confirmation

Entopia is a huge nature park home to over 15,000 butterflies and many other insects and small animals.

The park is divided into two sections:

The Outdoor Butterfly Garden

This area is designed like a tropical rainforest where butterflies freely fly around visitors.

The boys were extremely excited whenever a butterfly landed on them.

It felt like walking inside a real butterfly habitat.

The Indoor Discovery Centre

About an hour into our visit it started raining, but luckily Entopia also has a large indoor area filled with:

• Educational insect exhibits
• Interactive displays
• Reptiles and amphibians
• Science learning stations

Because of this indoor space, the rain did not disrupt our plans at all.

We spent about two hours exploring Entopia, which felt like the perfect amount of time with young kids.

For lunch, we ate at the Entopia Café, which offers simple meals and drinks before we continued our journey.

The journey took about 45 minutes and both boys managed to nap along the way.

Once we checked in and settled down, we decided to head out for dinner nearby.

Just a 3 minute walk from our hotel is a famous hawker centre called:

Long Beach Hawker Centre
Address: Jalan Batu Ferringhi, 11100 Batu Ferringhi, Penang

This open air food court is a popular dinner spot for both locals and tourists.

Here you can find many Penang street food favourites including:

• Char Kway Teow
• Oyster omelette
• Satay
• Hokkien Mee
• BBQ seafood

It was the perfect introduction to Penang’s incredible food culture.

Day 6: Batu Ferringhi Beach & Dinner At Golden River

The second day of our trip was intentionally kept relaxed.

Since we were staying at a beachfront resort, we spent the morning enjoying Batu Ferringhi Beach.

The boys had so much fun playing with sand and running along the shore while we enjoyed the sea breeze.

After some beach time, we also visited a nearby playground where Hengboi could run around and burn off some energy.

In the afternoon we returned to the hotel for pool time.

PARKROYAL’s pool area is fantastic for families and includes water slides that older kids will love.

For dinner that evening we walked to a nearby restaurant:

Golden River Restaurant
Address: Jalan Sungai Emas, Batu Ferringhi, 11100 Penang

Golden River is known for its Chinese seafood dishes and family‑style meals.

It is a good option when travelling with kids because the menu includes many familiar dishes like fried rice, vegetables and seafood.

✨ Other Things to Do in Penang (Saving for Our Next Trip!)

Even though we packed quite a lot into this trip, there were still a few places in Penang that we didn’t manage to visit — and honestly, that just gives us more reasons to come back again 😆
