If you’re wondering whether Lake Toya is worth adding to a Hokkaido family road trip, my answer is yes—but I’d give it at least two nights.
After several busy days travelling around Hokkaido, we arrived at Lake Toya ready to slow down.
Our route had already taken us from Sapporo to Furano, then through to Hakodate, so by the time we reached Lake Toya, everyone needed a little breathing space.
And that’s exactly what we used our two nights for.
Instead of packing every hour with attractions, we combined a lakeside resort stay, a fireworks cruise, a sightseeing cruise and the Usuzan Ropeway, with plenty of downtime in between.
Here’s exactly how we spent our time, what I would recommend for families and what I would do differently next time.

For us, this was the right amount of time. One night would have felt rushed, while two nights gave us enough time to enjoy the lake without turning it into another packed sightseeing stop.
🚗 Getting from Hakodate to Lake Toya
We drove from Hakodate to Lake Toya, which took around 2.5 hours, depending on traffic and stops.
Since we were travelling with kids, we didn’t try to power through the entire drive.
One of our favourite family-friendly stops was Yakumo Rest Area, where the boys could burn off some energy at the large indoor playground, which was free to use.
For me, these little stops make a huge difference on a family road trip.
A 2.5-hour drive might sound manageable on paper, but with children, a playground break can be the difference between a peaceful car ride and everyone asking, “Are we there yet?” every five minutes. 😂
🏨 Where We Stayed: The Lake View Toya Nonokaze Resort
We stayed two nights at The Lake View Toya Nonokaze Resort, and the location was one of the biggest reasons I liked this stay.
The hotel sits right by Lake Toya, so the lake became part of the experience rather than something we had to drive to see.
After our long road trip, we checked in and kept our first afternoon intentionally slow.
We explored around the resort, enjoyed the lake views and simply let the kids relax.

🎆 Day 1: Lake Toya Fireworks Cruise
One of the highlights of our Lake Toya stay was the Lake Toya fireworks cruise.
Lake Toya is famous for its long-running fireworks display, with the fireworks taking place over the lake during the main season.
The famous Lake Toya Long-Run Fireworks Festival runs every night from late April to the end of October, making summer a great time to experience it. The fireworks typically run from 8:45pm to 9:05pm, although schedules and operations can change depending on weather.
But instead of simply watching from the shore or from our resort, we boarded the sightseeing boat and watched the fireworks from the water.
And honestly?
This was one of those experiences that felt much more special because we were travelling as a family.
The boys could see the fireworks from a completely different perspective, while we got to enjoy the lake at night.
After several days of driving and sightseeing, it was also a surprisingly relaxing way to spend the evening.
Family tip
If the fireworks cruise is something you really want to do, check the operating schedule and availability for your travel dates before you arrive.
Schedules can change, particularly with weather conditions, so don’t rely on an old itinerary you find online.
🛶 Day 2: Lake Toya Sightseeing Cruise
The following day, we explored Lake Toya from the water again—but this time during the day.
The Lake Toya sightseeing cruise takes visitors around the lake and towards the Nakajima islands in the middle of the caldera lake.
The official tourism information describes Lake Toya as a large caldera lake surrounded by mountains, with the forested Nakajima islands sitting in the middle.
For families, I liked the cruise because it gives you beautiful scenery without requiring a hike.
You can sit back, enjoy the views and let the children have a change of scenery without another long drive.
How long is the Lake Toya sightseeing cruise?
The standard sightseeing cruise is roughly 50 minutes if you stay on board, while allowing time to disembark at Nakajima and take a later boat makes the experience longer.
My tip: If you’re travelling with younger children or grandparents, the shorter cruise is an easy addition to your itinerary. If everyone is happy exploring, you can allow more time around Nakajima.
Always check the latest operating schedule before your trip.
🌋 Usuzan Ropeway: One of Our Lake Toya Highlights
From the lake, we headed to the Usuzan Ropeway.
This takes you towards the summit area of Mount Usu, an active volcano overlooking Lake Toya.
And this was definitely one of the attractions I’d recommend adding to a family Lake Toya itinerary.
The ropeway ride itself is short, but once you reach the upper station, you get panoramic views across:
- Lake Toya
- Nakajima
- Mount Usu
- Showa Shinzan
- The surrounding landscape
There are observation areas around the summit, so you can decide how far you want to walk depending on your family.
The official ropeway information currently estimates around 40 minutes for the ropeway plus Lake Toya Observation Deck, or around 60 minutes if you also visit the Usu Crater Basin Observation Deck.
Family tip: Check the weather before heading up. Visibility can make a huge difference to the experience.
🌊 What Else Can You Do Around Lake Toya?
You don’t need to fill your itinerary with attractions.
That’s actually one of my biggest recommendations.
Lake Toya itself is the attraction.
Some additional options you can consider include:
🚶 Lake Toya Lakeside Promenade
One of our favourite things was simply taking a relaxed walk along the lakeside, stopping to admire the outdoor sculptures and enjoy the scenery.
The boys also had fun feeding the fish, and we found an outdoor hot spring area where we could soak our hands and feet in the warm water. It was such a simple experience, but honestly, these are often the little moments the kids remember most.
💡 Family tip: If you’re travelling with kids, leave some unplanned time around Lake Toya. You never know what little experiences you’ll stumble across—and it gives everyone a chance to slow down after a busy day of sightseeing.
This is an easy option if you want something that doesn’t require a ticket or a long drive.
🦢 Swan Boats
We did a swan boat ride during our stay. It’s located just outside our resort.
This is one of those easy, low-commitment activities that can work well if you’re travelling with younger children and have some spare time.
🐄 Lake Hill Farm
If you have more time, Lake Hill Farm is another family-friendly option around the Lake Toya area, particularly if your children enjoy animals, dairy products and ice cream.
🌋 Showa Shinzan
Showa Shinzan is located near the Usuzan Ropeway and can easily be combined with your volcano sightseeing. We decided to skip it as our boys were tired.
❌ What We Didn’t Do
One thing I want to highlight about our itinerary:
We didn’t try to do everything.
And that’s intentional.
With kids, especially after several days of travelling, I would rather choose a few good experiences than spend the entire day rushing from one attraction to another.
We prioritised:
🎆 Fireworks cruise
🚢 Lake cruise
🌋 Usuzan Ropeway
🏨 Resort time
And left enough space for everyone to rest.
That’s also why I think 2 nights in Lake Toya works better than trying to squeeze it into a day trip.
🚗 Day 3: Lake Toya → Sapporo
After breakfast, we checked out and started our drive towards Sapporo.
Rather than making the journey purely about getting back to the city, we added an outlet stop along the way.
This worked nicely as our final shopping break before returning to Sapporo.
If you’re travelling with children, I actually recommend treating your final driving day as part of the itinerary rather than assuming you need to rush back to the hotel.
A flexible stop gives everyone a chance to stretch, shop and take a break.
How Many Nights Do You Need in Lake Toya?
⭐ My recommendation: 2 nights
1 night:
Possible, but quite rushed.
2 nights:
⭐ My pick for families
You have enough time for:
- Resort check-in and downtime
- Fireworks cruise
- Daytime sightseeing cruise
- Usuzan Ropeway
- A relaxed morning
- Flexible weather adjustments
3+ nights:
Worth considering if you want a very slow resort holiday or want to add more surrounding attractions.
For our Hokkaido road trip, 2 nights felt just right.
Is Lake Toya Worth Visiting With Kids?
Yes—but I wouldn’t treat it like another checklist destination.
That’s probably my biggest takeaway.
If your Hokkaido itinerary is already packed with cities, flower fields, zoos, markets and long drives, Lake Toya gives you something different.
It’s about:

🚢 Cruises
🎆 Fireworks
🌋 Volcano scenery
💙 Slower family time
And after our busy Furano and Hakodate days, that slower pace was exactly what we needed.

💡 My Family Travel Tips for Lake Toya
1. Stay 2 nights if you can.
It gives you breathing room.
2. Don’t over-plan.
Lake Toya is best enjoyed at a slower pace.
3. Do the fireworks cruise if your dates allow.
It’s one of the most memorable experiences from our stay.
4. Check the weather before Usuzan Ropeway.
Clear visibility makes the views much more rewarding.
5. Combine attractions geographically.
Usuzan Ropeway and Showa Shinzan are close together, so don’t waste time driving back and forth.
6. Keep a flexible plan.
We had already experienced changing weather in Hakodate, and Lake Toya was another reminder that family travel doesn’t always go exactly according to plan.
7. Don’t forget the kids need downtime too.
This was probably the most important lesson from our Hokkaido road trip.
Where Lake Toya Fits Into Our Hokkaido Road Trip
Lake Toya was part of our larger Hokkaido family road trip, which took us through:
Sapporo & Otaru→ Furano → Biei → Hakodate → Lake Toya → Sapporo
We deliberately kept our driving days manageable where possible and used Lake Toya as our slower reset after Hakodate.
If you’re planning a similar route, I would recommend putting Lake Toya after Hakodate rather than trying to rush through it as a day trip from Sapporo.
♨️ Should You Add Noboribetsu Hell Valley to Your Lake Toya Itinerary?
One question that came up when planning our route was whether we should squeeze in Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Hell Valley) as well.
And actually, the two destinations are fairly close.
🚗 How close is Noboribetsu to Lake Toya?
If you’re driving, the approximate journey times are:

Noboribetsu → Sapporo
~1 hr 15–30 minutes
Lake Toya → Sapporo
~1 hr 40 minutes
So yes—Lake Toya → Noboribetsu → Sapporo is a perfectly possible route.
In fact, this was something we considered for our final day.
So why didn’t we go?
Simply because we didn’t want to squeeze in another major attraction just for the sake of ticking it off.
By this point, we’d already travelled through Furano → Hakodate → Lake Toya, with several long driving days and plenty of sightseeing.
We had already enjoyed:

So instead of turning our final day into another packed sightseeing day, we chose to enjoy a slower morning, check out and make our way towards Sapporo—with an outlet stop along the way.
And honestly, with the kids, I think we made the right call.
🌋 But is Noboribetsu worth visiting?
Definitely, if you have the time.
Noboribetsu Hell Valley is a volcanic valley famous for its steaming vents, rugged volcanic landscape and sulphurous atmosphere. There are walking trails around the area, making it quite a different experience from Lake Toya.
If you have an extra half-day, I’d consider doing:
Lake Toya → Noboribetsu Hell Valley → Sapporo
You’ll need to allow additional time for parking, walking around Jigokudani and possibly grabbing a meal, so it isn’t simply a 40-minute detour.
👨👩👧👦 What I’d recommend for families
If you only have 2 nights in Lake Toya:
I’d keep the itinerary relaxed like we did and skip Noboribetsu unless it’s a must-see for your family.
If you have an extra day or are happy with a fuller itinerary:
Add Noboribetsu on your way from Lake Toya to Sapporo.
💡 My biggest family travel lesson: You don’t have to visit every famous attraction in Hokkaido. Sometimes choosing fewer things and enjoying them properly makes for a much happier family trip.
For us, those two slower nights in Lake Toya were exactly what we needed after the busier parts of our Hokkaido road trip.
Final Verdict: Should You Add Lake Toya to Your Hokkaido Itinerary?
Absolutely—especially if you’re travelling with kids.
But don’t come here expecting another city filled with attractions.
Come for the lake, scenery, onsen, cruises and slower pace.
Our two nights gave us enough time to experience the highlights without feeling like we were constantly packing and unpacking.
And after the long drives and busy sightseeing days earlier in our trip, that was exactly what our family needed.
Sometimes the best part of a family holiday isn’t another attraction. It’s finally having time to sit down, look at the view and breathe. 💙
