Day 15 and 16 – Dotonbori, Takashimaya and Home Sweet Home

As our journey draws to a close, we’re preparing to fly back home today, and I’m already feeling a wave of nostalgia for Japan. This morning, we enjoyed breakfast in our room while the kids played with the toys and slides. After packing our luggage, we stored it at the reception and set out to explore.

Our destination was Dotonbori, Osaka’s renowned and bustling district. We made a stop at the nearby Don Quijote store to pick up some last-minute souvenirs and treats and ended up having to buy a big foldable bag from Don to store all our loots.

Iconic Ferris Wheel

Dotonbori is home to some of Osaka’s most famous landmarks:

  • Glico Running Man: This giant neon sign of a running man has been a symbol of Dotonbori since 1935. It’s a must-see and makes for a great photo op.
  • Kani Doraku Crab: Another iconic sign featuring a giant mechanical crab that moves. This is a well-known spot for fresh crab dishes.
  • Don Quijote Ferris Wheel: A unique, oval-shaped Ferris wheel attached to the Don Quijote discount store, offering great views of the district.

There are two Don Quijote stores within walking distance of our hotel. On our first night in Osaka, we visited the smaller one nearby. Today, even though we thought we were finished shopping, we couldn’t resist picking up another foldable bag from Don Quijote to accommodate all the snacks we purchased. Additionally, I stocked up on Biore UV sunscreen and Pigeon baby food, both of which were significantly cheaper here!

On the second floor of Mega Don, you’ll find a tax-free counter, so make sure to have your passport handy. However, keep in mind that they’ll seal these items in a clear bag, and you’re not supposed to open it. If you intend to use any of the items immediately, consider paying for them separately.

Opening Hours: 10am to 10pm

We then went for lunch at Ichiran Ramen, which was just a few minutes’ walk from Mega Don Quijote Dotonbori. The seating is not exactly kids friendly, I have to carry hengboi2 on my leg. But the noodles are really worth coming for. The broth is so good that henboi2 kept eating that i think he ate more than me.

We then headed to the nearby Takashimaya to explore the department store and allow the boys to take a nap. We also had our tea break and dinner there.

As the rain poured heavily outside, we received news of an approaching typhoon.

All train services being suspended.

We had wisely booked our airport transfer through Klook, which turned out to be a lifesaver! While my siblings opted for the airport train, their plans were thwarted by the typhoon. Despite attempting to rent a car and calling for taxi services, they faced roadblocks due to the inclement weather. With our flight unaffected by the typhoon, they feared missing their flight. Fortunately, luck was on our side when our Klook transport arrived—a mini bus, despite booking for 4 adults and 2 children only. The driver graciously accommodated all 9 adults and 3 children for a small surcharge, ensuring we all reached the airport on time. What an adventure it turned out to be!
