Choosing between infant care and hiring a helper for infant care can be a tough decision. With my two kids, I’ve experienced both. Sending my first child, Hengboi, to infant care at 2 months old was challenging but necessary due to lack of help. Despite initial guilt, it resulted in early independence and rapid development in motor and oral skills. However, frequent sickness and hospitalizations took a toll on both his and my health. For my second child, we opted for a helper but still enrolled him in infant care at 6 months as i do see the benefits it does to Hengboi development. However, after a few episodes of sickness and two hospitalizations within a short period, we withdrew him temporarily and let the helper take over until he was 2. Although he fell sick less often at home, i felt that his motor and verbal skills weren’t as advanced initially compared to his brother. But, he’s steadily progressing and hitting milestones.

In addition to childcare, having a helper offers the perk of assistance with housework and cooking, allowing more quality time with family. However, it does come with extra financial responsibility due to the additional household members. As long as she treats my kids well, I can overlook some housework. Hygiene, though, is non-negotiable – I insist on daily toilet cleaning and floor maintenance. When Hengboi falls sick, I’ll order for takeaway to ease her load, prioritizing his care
Working from home allowed me to supervise the helper closely, influencing my decision to withdraw my second child from infant care and entrust his care to her. If I were fully office-based, I might have felt less comfortable leaving my baby alone with the helper for extended periods. WFH significantly influenced my choice regarding childcare arrangements.

In the end, both options have their pros and cons. It’s about finding what works best for your family’s needs and circumstances.”
