Transiting to floor mattress @ 10 months old

HengBoi does Kungfu in his sleep. He never fail to wake himself up in the middle of the night by knocking himself against the bars of the cot multiple times. and of course it affects my sleep as well. He also started developing preference for my seahly bed instead and ended up falling off my bed multiple times. So when he was 10 months old, we made the painful decision to sell away our Stokke Cot (I love this cot) and transit him to the floor mattress. This turns out to be the best decision ever as his multiple waking up stops and we did have to be worried about him falling off the bed..

Initially when he fell (~3 months old), I was filled with guilt and kept blaming myself! He just learnt to flip n somehow managed to wiggle off my bed. I heard a loud thud of his head hitting the floor followed by loud cry. Mummy please don’t! Its normal and part and parcel of growing up! We became very vigilant after his first fall, but once they start getting mobile, its hard to prevent all falls.

Things to take note after a fall

  • Stay calm
  • Check for injury. Call 955 if your baby appears to have signs of head injury like bleeding, or unconsciousness .
  • If no visible sign of injury, comfort your baby (hengboi was crying badly) as they are likely to be alarmed and scared. Once he settled down, I gave him milk and soothe him back to sleep.
  • Inspect body for injuries or bruising
  • See signs that a trip to the hospital is required.
  • Monitor for the next 48 hours for symptoms like vomiting , lethargic. Mother instinct – you will know if your baby is not his usual self.

I bought a tatami mat and place it on top of a play mat to give it enough thickness and fluffiness. Hengboi love it !
