Plan your Hakodate stop around the Hakodate Port Festival.
When we were mapping out our Hokkaido road trip, we realised we’d be arriving in Hakodate on 1 August—the opening day of the city’s biggest summer festival.
Instead of treating Hakodate as just another overnight stop, we decided to make the most of it.
We wandered through the lively festival streets, picked up dinner from the food stalls, found a cosy spot by the bay for our little family picnic, and watched the night sky light up with spectacular fireworks.
Looking back, it became one of our favourite family memories from Hokkaido.
If your trip happens to fall in early August, I highly recommend planning your Hakodate stay around this festival too.
What is the Hakodate Port Festival?
The Hakodate Port Festival (Hakodate Minato Matsuri) is one of Hakodate’s biggest annual celebrations.
Held every year from 1–5 August, the festival transforms the city with lively streets, traditional yukata, dance performances, food stalls and the famous opening night fireworks over Hakodate Port.
Although visitors love it, what makes it special is how local it feels. Families, friends and visitors all come together to enjoy one of Hakodate’s biggest summer traditions.
Festival Food + A Family Picnic
Rather than rushing between attractions, we slowed down.
The boys had so much fun choosing what they wanted to eat from the festival stalls.
We picked up a little of everything before walking towards the waterfront.
Finding a spot by the bay, we enjoyed our own little family picnic while waiting for the fireworks.
Honestly, sometimes it’s these simple travel moments that become the most memorable.
The Fireworks
As darkness fell, everyone gathered along the waterfront.
Then the fireworks began.
For almost an hour, colourful fireworks exploded above Hakodate Port while reflecting beautifully across the water.
The atmosphere was incredible.
Watching the boys’ faces light up was every bit as memorable as the fireworks themselves.
If you’re travelling to Hokkaido in summer, this is genuinely an experience worth planning for.
Family Tips for Visiting Hakodate Port Festival
After experiencing it ourselves, here are a few things I’d recommend.
✔ Arrive before sunset
The atmosphere before the fireworks is part of the experience.
You’ll have time to explore the festival, browse the food stalls and find somewhere comfortable to sit.
✔ Grab food before finding your viewing spot
We loved turning dinner into a little picnic by the bay.
There are plenty of festival food stalls, so let everyone choose something different to share.
✔ Bring a picnic mat
A lightweight picnic mat makes waiting much more comfortable, especially with children.
✔ Pack a light jacket
Even in August, it can become breezy by the waterfront after sunset.
✔ Check the official festival schedule
Fireworks timings and weather postponements may change each year.
Where Are the Festival Food Stalls?
The main food stalls are typically located around Hakodate Green Plaza, while the fireworks are launched from Green Island over Hakodate Port.
Our simple evening looked like this:
